Spring Run STEAM Club

Our STEAM Club is a group of families who are passionate using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math to solve problems and have fun. This parent-led group has met in the evenings for the last several years to create  exciting opportunities for our students outside of the typical classroom structure. We have fun plans for this year that your family won’t want to miss!

Who: Students join together in teams of seven with two adult “team managers”. Although teams work independently, multiple teams will share the same meeting nights, location, and agenda.

What: Teams race the clock to solve fun and engaging challenges that require science, technology, engineering, and math. They will then participate in a tournament in the spring. The cost is $30 per student.

When: Teams will meet once a week starting the week of December 4th and going through February; with a tournament on a Saturday late February. See the whole schedule here which includes the specific meeting dates for all of our teams. There will not be meetings on school holidays.

Where: Team meetings will take place at Spring Run Elementary, the regional tournament is at Goochland High School.

Why: Learning how to think fast and work together as a team to apply skills and techniques being taught in the classroom will help our students succeed. It’s also a ton of fun!Sign Up Now!

This year we are partnering with Destination Imagination to provide a new take on STEAM oriented challenges, leading towards a tournament in Feburary. Since this is our first year with the Destination Imagination, we are using an abbreviated program where teams of similar-aged students will learn to work together to race the clock and solve challenges using a range of skills, then come together to compete in part of the regional Destination Imagination competition.

Join a STEAM Team!

Teams are forming that will meet one evening about every week through February, you can see the schedule here. Each of our teams has seven students in similar grades, and two adult volunteers. Our teams will have their weekly meeting at Spring Run Elementary from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on either Tuesdays or Thursdays – depending on the team you join.

Parent Team Managers

Our parent “Team Managers” help run the team meeting using a plan provided in advance, act as a referee during challenges, and coach their teams to work together and have fun – it’s an easy role with a big impact! Two parents volunteer as Team Managers for each team, and they have the support of our STEAM Club and other teams meeting the same night to ensure their team meetings are successful.

We are also planning a regular evening conference call before each meeting so that any Team Managers who have questions about the plans can get answers questions, voice feedback, and run a fantastic meeting with our students.

Other Opportunities

Keep an eye out for additional STEAM Club activities in the spring, including a trip to Washington DC for the USA Science and Engineering Festival. This event is an amazing opportunity to meet with people from around the country and explore the latest technologies and innovations!

Information from our club is typically sent out over our email list, and we also have discussions and make announcements on our Facebook group.
